So I saw as like a review somewhere of Of Monsters and Men, “Meet your new Arcade Fire.” And I was like, um, no, I don’t think so….? I would group them in with Mumford & Sons to be honest. I’m not really sure where that comparison came from?

I’d stick Grouplove with Arcade Fire. I get a much stronger “Children wake up, our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up,” vibe from Hannah and the boys. But I mean, that’s just my opinion, w/e.

And I feel like, unfortunately, it’s been apologetic. But as long as you’re creating the art you want to create, if people start liking you, you shouldn’t have to apologize. You want your stuff to be heard by as many people as possible.

we get older, they get younger

What I love about The Black Parade is it’s part broadway musical and part screamo guitars without the screaming. How fantastic is that?

C’mon | Panic!, Fun.

Feels like I am falling down a rabbit hole.
Falling for forever, wonderfully wandering alone.
What would my head be like, if not for my shoulders.

Seventeen - Marina and the Diamonds

5 songs from 5 albums you should be listening to this summer

Some Nights - Fun.Some Nights

I was never one to believe the hype; save that for the black and white.
I try twice as hard and I’m half as liked
but here they come again to jack my style

For fans of the Fueled by Ramen family. And like, everyone really. This is a fantastic song.

All I Need - Awolnation, Megalithic Symphony

I think I’m getting closer, but the scenery’s the same
Am I a disappointment? I blame it on the pain

I have no idea who listens to Awolnation. All I know is they’re different and I like it.

King and Lionheart - Of Monsters and Men, My Head is an Animal

Howling ghosts, they reappear in mountains stacked with fear
but you’re a king and I’m a lion heart

For the Mumford set.

Heartbeat - JJAMZ, Suicide Pact (out July 10th)

Who am I to say I want you back
when you were never mine to give away
I was waiting for a long, long time
for you to feel the same

For you California hipster types. Obviously the album’s not out yet but I really the dig the two released tracks so I’m thinking it’ll be a good one.

Gold Coast - Grouplove, Grouplove EP (full-length Never Trust a Happy Song)

So where you from, son?
And are you a troubled one?
And if so, come under my wings.

For all of the above. Did I mention I love this band or…?

WHEN THE FUCK DID THIS FUCKING HAPPEN

HOLY FUCK FUCKING FUCK

Nate can sing other people’s songs fine, but damn, when he sings his own work, it’s glorious.

This. song. is. perfect.

10 of my favorite music videos (in no particular order)

Lying is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off - Panic! at the Disco

This is my favorite video from the Fever era, and definitely one of my all-time favorites from Panic! in general. I love the concept, I love it visually; it reminds me a lot of those 90s videos the boys idolized back in the day. It’s a love story, it’s beautiful, and I think it’s a highly underrated video.

Itchin’ on a Photograph - Grouplove

My favorite video they’ve done so far. My new favorite band. Great song. Christian’s voice is amazing. They’re amazing, it looks like they’re always having a great time, and I love that.

Samson - Regina Spektor

It’s hard to pick just one favorite Regina song, but this one is at the top of mine. I love everything about this video; it’s got her usual stop-motion whimsy, she looks gorgeous, and I love the muted colors and the 1920s vibe. Stunning.

Round Here - Counting Crows

I know I always gush over Panic!’s cover of this song, but the original is just as incredible. I’ve become a huge fan of Counting Crows through this song, and it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I watched this video for the first time. While the song on its own sounds to me like an ode to a manic pixie dream girl named Maria, the video comes across as much more political, and I got chills watching it because at 19 years later, it still feels relevant.

Tonight, Tonight - The Smashing Pumpkins

Yes okay Panic! covered this song too, but the video is just too good to not make the list. This video was pretty much the basis for Panic!’s visual presence during the Fever era, and you can still see the influence in their newer stuff, like the video for “Ready to Go.” It’s like a fairytale and I can’t help but love it.

Rangers - A Fine Frenzy

Speaking of fairytales, I can’t not mention the queen of musical fairytales and whimsy herself, A Fine Frenzy. This album was a crucial stepping stone for my interest in music, and “Rangers” was probably my favorite song for a good 3 or 4 years of high school. Alison’s imagery in her songs inspired me and moved me; I wanted to live in the world created in her videos and her music. Her words defined me and what I liked and what I wanted to be. She was like an oasis in a desert of really bad music. I’ve since moved on to other things, but her fairytales will always be remembered fondly. (side note: this isn’t the full video… for some reason I can’t find the full version on YT)

June Gloom - The Like

I love a good monochromatic music video. While I love their 60s vibe on their second full-length Release Me, I honestly prefer the lovechild look and 90s grunge sound of Are You Thinking What I’m Thinking? This video reminds of the opening credits of a retro sitcom, a la The Brady Bunch. I dig it. Also, this was the first song I learned to play on bass, fyi.

Obsessions - Marina and the Diamonds

Understated video, but I like it. Marina’s always got interesting videos up her sleeve. It’s just her tinkering around in a cat sweater, assembling a massive light-up LED diamond sculpture. Works for me.

Born to Die - Lana del Rey

I love me an over-the-top cinematic music video. Critics have accused Lana of being boring, but I could honestly care less. Just her facial expressions in this video are like… it’s great. They’re intense and subtle. The video is way dramatic, but that’s what I like about it. Fitting for the song.

Love Interruption - Jack White

Jack and the Peacocks doing what they do best… being badass musicians. Chills. Jack’s incredible.

jack fucking white what more can I say
